FAQS

Who is responsible for bee removal?

Who is responsible for bee removal?

In this video, we will explain who is responsible for bee removal for both residential and commercial properties.

We will also answer common questions like…
Is it the landowner responsible for the bee removal?
Is my landlord responsible to remove the bees?
Who is responsible to remove bees from offices?

If you are reading this or have watched the video, unfortunately, it’s probably going to be you or at least you’ll have some influence in the process.

You might be a tenant experiencing a problem with a bee issue in the chimney, roof or wall and they may even be coming into your house.

The straight answer to the question is, if the bees are on a landowners property, then it is the responsibility of the landowner to sort them out. If you are the property owner, then it is your responsibility, but if you are a tenant, your landlord is responsible, but please double-check your rental agreement and what is included.

If you’re an employer and have bees on your building and own the building, it would be your responsibility. Under UK employment law, you will need to sort out the issue because bees sting and obviously for the health and safety of your employees it’s going to be important to get the bee issue resolved.

Will your insurance pay for bee removal?

Will your insurance pay for bee removal?

In this video, we will explain whether your insurance company will cover the cost of honeybee removal.

We will also answer common questions like …
what insurance companies pay for bee removal?
what helps with an insurance claim?
will the insurance company pay for part of the cost?
how to get an insurance company to help cover the cost?
how do I know if my insurance company covers the cost?

Typically insurance companies won’t pay for pest control services. Usually, insurance documents state that they will not cover damage caused by pests and sometimes they will list the pests. As a result, it is unusual for insurance companies to cover the costs of a honeybee removal as they fall into the classification of a pest.

However, in 14 years we have had insurance companies pay some of the cost for the bee removal or even half the amount and in some situations, they have even paid in full.

In these cases, it has been really helpful to have a survey carried out and a full and detailed report with pictures put together and sent to the insurance company because having bees in a building can lead to building damage if not dealt with.

Why do we charge for bee removal when others do it for free?

Why do we charge for bee removal when others do it for free?

In this video, we will explain why we charge for bee removal when other people will do it for free. Explaining why, in some cases, a beekeeper is a right option to go for and when it isn’t.

We will also answer common questions like…
When will a beekeeper remove my bees?
What factors will require me to pay for a bee removal?
Why is it important to proof an area?
Will the bees come back?

The primary reason we charge for bee removal is that as a business, we must cover our operational costs and adhere to certain rules and regulations. Additionally, our service is comprehensive, covering all aspects of bee removal.

Unlike enthusiasts or hobbyists who might remove bees for free out of a passion for the environment or to expand their bee colonies, our approach is professional and thorough. One of the key factors justifying our fees is the extensive service we provide, including the use of specific methods.

We ensure safety by arranging scaffolding, which is essential when bees inhabit high areas in buildings or trees. This not only provides a secure platform for our team but also safeguards the public and protects the integrity of the building.

Our service involves comprehensive building work. We carefully remove parts of the building to access and extract the honeycomb and bees. After the removal, we meticulously perform reinstatement work to maintain the buildingā€™s watertight integrity.

Moreover, we take steps to prevent future infestations by proofing the area, which is crucial as bees often attempt to return to previous locations. We stand by our work with a guarantee: if the bees return, we offer repeat removal and reinstatement services at no additional cost to our clients.

Live bee comb removal, often known as a cut-out, is where you are cutting the honeycomb and the bees out of that void space.

Cut-outs usually require working at height equipment because bees often like to go high. This equipment would be a scaffold or a cherry picker. You also often need a lot of building equipment because bees often colonise in walls, roof and chimneys which you will need to take apart. Tools to cut the honeycomb and the bees out of the wall or void space will also be required.

Finally, you need an artificial hive to then move the bees into to rehome. You need frames and elastic bands which hold the wild honeycomb into the frames so they sit inside the artificial hive.

You will then need building experience to put that building back together again and complete reinstatement work.

When you remove bees there will be a number of bees flying around and a residue of bees in that area. So that opening needs to be closed or covered fairly quickly. This is important to prevent rain from getting or other bees that may be looking for a new home. Once you have cut away the comb and removed the bees there is still a scent of honey and comb in the area making it very attractive for other bees to recolonise that area.

During one cut-out we carried out, we removed around 300 kilograms of comb from a soffit board. We cut away the wooden soffit board and we took that honey and brood comb out and put it into an artificial hive.

What seems like couple of hundred bees flying in and out of the hole turned out to be a great deal more. You can have anywhere from 5000 bees to 100000 bees in a colony. Bees make between 25 to 50 kilograms of honey in a year. So if you had a problem for 10 years, there could be a significant issue within a building.

If youā€™ve just bought a building or moved into a building, you donā€™t know the history of that void space. What might look like a problem thatā€™s just started may have been there for a long period of time. If you moved in during the winter, honeybees are not active in the winter. Theyā€™re alive in the winter, but they only become visible in the spring and summer when its warm enough to leave the comb. So it may be almost like thereā€™s no problem and then it gets very, very busy. The issue may have been there for ten years or longer and you just havenā€™t noticed it in that location.

Why is scaffolding erected a few days before the removal?

Why is scaffolding erected a few days before the removal?

A tower or scaffolding may be delivered/erected a few days before the removal for a number of reasons.

The primary reason is to ensure there are no delays on the day of removal. There may also be a ladder for scaffolding left in the garden.

Asbestos checks

In some instances, an asbestos check may need to be carried out to ensure the removal process is safe. This sometimes occurs up to a week before the removal.

When does the scaffolding come down?

Once all works have been completed, a quality check has been performed and final payment received, then we will arrange to have the access removed for you. We will inform you when they will be arriving to remove the scaffold or tower access.

Can I have the honey from a bee removal?

Can I have the honey from a bee removal?

When dealing with honey obtained from a bee removal in a building, several important considerations come into play, making it distinct from honey produced under controlled conditions by beekeepers. The primary concern revolves around health and safety regulations, which are stringent regarding consumable products. Here’s an expanded explanation of why you cannot have the honey from such a removal:

1. Health and Safety Regulations: Government and health authorities have strict regulations concerning food safety. These regulations require that food products, including honey, meet specific standards before they can be deemed safe for consumption. Honey obtained from a bee removal lacks the controlled environment of bee farms, making it impossible to guarantee its safety without thorough testing, which is often not feasible in these situations.

2.Ā  Contamination Risks: Honey from a bee removal could be contaminated with pollutants or toxins from the building materials, pesticides, or other chemicals present in the environment where the bees built their hive. Unlike bee farms, where the surroundings and inputs into the honey production process can be controlled and monitored, hives in buildings are exposed to a wide range of potential contaminants.

3. Disease Transmission: Bees from unknown hives could carry diseases or parasites that affect bee health. While these may not directly impact human health, they can influence the quality and safety of the honey produced. Honey destined for human consumption is harvested from bees that are managed and treated for such issues, ensuring the honey is free from these risks.

4. Lack of Processing: Commercially available honey often undergoes processing, which includes filtration and pasteurization to remove impurities and kill off any pathogens. Honey from a bee removal has not been processed, meaning it could contain foreign particles, wax, bee parts, or bacteria that make it unsuitable for consumption.

5. Legal Liability: Offering honey from a bee removal could expose the remover or property owner to legal liability should someone become ill from consuming it. Without the ability to guarantee the safety of the honey, it is legally prudent not to distribute it for consumption.

For these reasons, it’s clear that while honey from bee removals may seem like a waste to discard, the priority must be on ensuring public health and safety. Beekeepers and removal services often have protocols for dealing with such honey, which can include using it for non-consumptive purposes or safely disposing of it to prevent further issues.
