BUMBLEBEE

Bumblebee

Bombus spp.

Description:

Bumblebees are large, hairy bees commonly seen in gardens and fields across the UK. They are easily identifiable by their robust bodies and fuzzy appearance. Bumblebees are typically non-aggressive and play a crucial role in pollinating a variety of plant species.

Additional Key Information:

SIZE: 1.5 – 2.5 cm long
DIET: Nectar and pollen from various flowers
HABITAT: Gardens, fields, woodlands, lofts, and bird boxes
DISTRIBUTION: Widespread across the UK and temperate regions of the world

1. Physical Characteristics
In the UK, there are several species of bumblebees, including the red-tailed, white-tailed, and tree bumblebee. The tree bumblebee is the most common, with its distinctive ginger body, black abdomen, and white tail. The red-tailed bumblebee is black with an orange-red tail; males have a yellow, hairy head and collar with a pale yellow midriff-band. The white-tailed bumblebee has a bright yellow collar, a yellow band on the abdomen, and a striking white tail.

2. Colony Size
Bumblebee colonies can range in size from small groups of just a few individuals to larger colonies with several hundred bees. These colonies are typically smaller than honeybee colonies, and their nests are more temporary.

3. Nesting Habits
Bumblebees often create nests in dry, dark spaces, such as underground holes or under sheds. They are also known to nest in lofts, bird boxes, and even in trees. Their nests are smaller and less structured compared to honeybee hives.

4. Aggression and Stings
Bumblebees are generally non-aggressive and pose little threat to humans. However, if their nest is disturbed, they may become defensive. It’s best to seek professional help from Beegone® for the safe removal of a nest, especially if it poses a risk to public health or is located in an inconvenient place.

5. Pollination Importance
Bumblebees are essential pollinators, particularly for crops and wild plants that honeybees cannot easily access due to their size or shape. Their ability to vibrate flowers, known as “buzz pollination,” allows them to extract pollen from plants like tomatoes, which makes them invaluable for agriculture and biodiversity.

6. Safe Removal of Bumblebee Nests
Though bumblebees are not typically aggressive, if a nest needs to be removed due to its location or if it’s a potential hazard, professional, non-lethal removal by Beegone® is recommended. This ensures the bees are relocated safely, without harm to them or their environment.
